.....RUDNIK
Numismatics is
dedicated to servicing the numismatic needs in several areas of classical
coin collecting for the beginning and advanced collector alike. We
offer interesting material in diverse price ranges, but are also committed
to popularizing the hobby of old coin collecting.
.....Our
business is for now conducted almost exclusively over the Web. We currently
feature a fixed price format, though given enough demand we might also
add an auction format. Material is added on a frequent basis to its respective
sections. It is divided and presented in five different areas, in a slightly
diverse way.
.....The
sections on Byzantine and medieval
Serbian coinage give a more standard chronological list of rulers,
and for explanations they are linked to educational presentations we have
helped bring up elsewhere. Ancient Greece
is given through a group of thematic collecting features, and the currently
smaller areas of Rome and Russia
are somewhat less structured. Of course, with "thematic" presentations,
please remember that this is an arbitrary convention, and that many items
may fall into two or more of the themes presented. Likewise, many items
may straddle the lines of defined areas (e.g. "colonial" issues
between Greece and Rome, or 5th c. coins between Late Rome and Byzantium),
so make sure you check in the right places for specific items of interest.
.....In
any case, we try to put as much historical context around the material
we offer, and include pictures of all but the cheapest coins. As a result,
occasionally some items that have either been sold or are not for sale
may be displayed, for presentation purposes. Our main focus is on retail
sales of classical coins. In addition, we provide secondary services, which
include buying material (individual pieces and collections) and doing consignment
sales, appraisal and attribution, and also sales of select medals, militaria
and related material. Regarding all these secondary services, please send
us a note through the Feedback section.

About our name:
..... The word Rudnik
(ROOD-nik) denotes a mine in a number of Slavic languages, including Russian
and Serbian. Its root is in the Slavic noun "rouda", meaning
"ore", which apparently in even older times specifically referred
to a red ore, and in turn is derived from the old Indo-European "*reudh",
which also generated the modern English words "red" and
"ruddy" (as in ruddy complexion), as
well as the modern Serbian verb "zarudeti" (to turn slightly
red).
..... Rudnik is also a place name for several
locations in the Balkans, the most prominent of which is a mountain in
north central Serbia, between present-day towns of Gornji Milanovac and
Arandjelovac. It derives its name from the Middle Ages, when this was the
site of one of three most prominent silver mines in medieval Serbia, and
the first one to have commenced operation, sometime in the 1290s, after
the original Brskovo mine some decades earlier. A money mint and large
trade center are known to have existed around it, which have operated as
part of the Serbian state through the mid-15th century. Referred to usually
in Italian and Latin documents as "dinari di Rudenico",
the silver pieces of the Rudnik mint were some of the finest medieval coins
of their time.
