Typically worn for most surviving pieces, yet still attractive example of this rather rare type. The legend employed here - Greek for "Our Lady, save the piuos Monomachos" is uniquely used on coinage for this emperor, and also exemplifies a very restricted class of types with the legend flowing from one side of the coin to the other. The present appeal by the martially clad Constantine to the help of Virgin Mary - protectress of the empire's capital, among other things - was possibly associated with a military revolt threatening the capital in 1049, though during this reign there were ample other junctures that may have waranted such a prayer.
