Rare and interesting miniature Archaic fraction, apparently unpublished in standard references, including the on-line ones. (Also see our lot G2651, for an related rare larger piece.) Interestingly, while the obverse cock is relatively standard badge of this locale (whose coinage is not plentiful altogether, however), the incuse calf's head is generally encountered only on electrum hektai from Mytilene, the large Aegean island somewhat further down the Asia Minor coast. Dardanos is associated with the eponymous legendary founder of Troy (from which also derives the name of the nearby Straights of Dardanelles), and also to the Eastern cult of Kabeiroi, rarely encountered in Europe (again, a bit more on that given with our lot G2651).
