A masterfully designed, executed and preserved reverse. The issuing satrap Datames had an illustrious career, being initially in charge of Cappadocia, having later assisted and succeded a colleague satrap, Pharnabazos, in the attempted reconquest of Egypt for the Persians, and finally participating in a satrapal revolt against their overlords, in the course of which he extended his rule as far north as the Black Sea port of Sinope, issuing this stater type in the process.
