One of the westermnost outposts of authentic ancient Greek civilizations, Massalia - today's Marseilles - was founded by Phokaian colonists from the other end of the Mediterranean, ca. 600 BC. The finely styled obverse die - while not rendering the usual image of the popular god - stands in noticable contrast to the Celtic types of the hinterland and further in, with which Gaulish culture (and coinage) of that era are usually more readilly associated.
