Attractive miniature classical representation of Apollo, from one of the few claimed birthplaces of the famous Homer. Remarkable as a rare series with denominations marked explicitly - here TE for tetartemorion (quarter obol), along with other types (of the same obverse design) with EM for hemiobol (half obol; see our lots G1929 and G3115) and TR for tritemorion (third obol). Somewhat puzzling is the fact that the weight here is far greater than what the tetartemorion would require (ca. 0.24g) and surpasses even the nominal tritemorion weight. The listed specimens from the CNG Turkey (Kayhan) catalog of this type exhibit a similar trend, but none to such a degree.
