At some point during Eumenes' reign - ca. 180-160 BC, and possibly even earlier - Pergamum ceased to issue royal tetradrachms of the Attic standard, and moved to the well-known cistophoric tetradrachms tied to the Roman monetary system. Styllistically, the present piece appears to belong to the final phase of the old issues, with a remarkable Hellenistic style on both sides. Characteristically, the portait of the dynasty founder departs here from the customary heavy, bull-necked earlier renditions, and the delicate style even subtly suggests features of the reigning ruler, by the same hand as in his famous unique portrait tetradrachnm (SG 7224; for discussion, see ANS Museum notes 27 - R. Bauslaugh: "The unique portrait tetradrachm of Eumenes II").
