This rare and attractive early Sicilain silver features Zeus with the unfamiliar hair style - more reminiscent of some renditions of Dionysos, but unmistakably identified by the laurel wreath (front of face off flan). Also scarce is the indigenous Sicilian litra denomination, whose early clash with the obol of the spreading Attic monetary standard resulted in the creation of a large bronze litra - and the revolutionary introduction of token (or fiat, i.e. not based on intrinsic metal value) coinage, the common form of money today.
