Many elements of Imperial Byzantine-style heraldry survived the fall of the great Empire, even to this day. For example, the double-headed eagle comes to mind, and it certainly found many heirs; the four "B"s quartering the cross is another example. Common in certain Byzantine iconography but rarely found on coinage, this design's intent and interpretation retain a dose of controversy and mystery. The elements have been seen to represent Greek 'beta', where it was tempting to view it as the "King of Kings" phrase of Christian scripture, among other readings. But it has also been interpreted as "briquets" or firesteels, and echoes of all these views are found in medieval Western heraldry spanning from the House of Burgundy to the Florentine banking family of Acciaiuolo. Later, the modified firesteels have come to be seen even as the letter "C", and as such retained prominence in certain parts of southeastern Europe - where they defined the coat-of-arms and came to signify important principles such as national unity... But that's another story, and for now, let the 4 Bs simply stand for our large selection of affordable Byzantine bulk coinage - the best way to get your hands dirty (often quite literally) and thus interested in this, at times seemingly challenging, but nevertheless subtly fascinating numismatic field...
