A rare issue altogether, obviously all the more interesting for the unexpected appearance of the rhinoceros. This great land mammal, which actually comes in five different species (three Asian and two African) appears to have suffered most setbacks in recent times - its worldwide population dwindling by some 85% to a mere 10,000 in the last three decades alone. Yet, even in ancient times, its African habitat was confined to sub-Saharan areas (with that of the Asian species coming no further west than the Indian subcontinent), making it an unlikely visitor even in the vast Roman Empire.
