An unusual and interesting Republican denarius design, and one of the few that can be precisely dated based on documentary evidence, which shows these two moneyers jointly holding the curule aedileship office in 58 BC. Each side is dedicated to one of the moneyers. Aem. Scaurus - a stepson of Sulla and later defendant of Cicero - served in numerous posts, and among others on Pompey's orders was sent in 62 BC to Arabia to subjugate Nabataean king Aretas; the latter avoided war by offering 300 talents tribute - as depicted on the obverse. P. Hypsaeus chose to commemorate an ancestor (C. Plautius Decianus Hypsaeus), whose capture of Privernum in 329 BC was granted a triumph, as shown on the coin's reverse.
