Interesting and notable historical type whose reverse refers to important civic legislation attributed to the moneyer's ancestor of the same name. Introduced in 199 BC and known as Lex Porcia Provocatione, this legal act granted Roman citizens residing outside the city the right of appeal in criminal matters against the magistrates acting in their military capacity. The present reverse provides an imaginative and vivid illustration of this, with the central figure, in military attire, placing a hand - as if granting rights - on the head of citizen (togate figure), attended by a lictor on the right. Only in the later century of the Empire would similar acts of largesse be immodestly advertised on coinage as deeds of living and issuing emperors.
