Discernible portraits of Augustus and his early heir apparent, as well as the reverse devices (crocodile and palm), on this decent example of a very popular type. Though a strictly local issue, token coinage shortages made this issue from Nemausus (modern Nimes in France) widely circulated in the Western provinces of the Empire. Though this type is sometimes denominated an "as", there are also opinions that it represents a (double in value) dupondius, particularly larger varieties like the present specimen.
