Czar Mihail Feodorovich Romanov emerged at the helm of Russia after the "troubled times" of the early 17th century, and his long reign inaugurated the dynasty that ruled the country right until the October Revolution of 1917-8, when the last czar, Nicholas II, was executed. Even though centuries of inflation reduced the denomination to a minor fraction (not unlike the European grosch), Russian kopeeks were once premier silver money, and their name comes from the spear that the rider - once St. George, and later the czar - characteristically holds. Early specimen, featuring the full name of Moscow as obverse mintmark.
